Olympics: Swiss soccer player sent home for racist tweet

Michel Morganella joined the growing list of athletes at the London Olympics who have gotten into hot water for using Twitter.

Is it possible that no one told Swiss soccer player?Michel Morganella that people he doesn't know can read Twitter? That, in fact, everyone?can read Twitter?

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

When his frustration at losing to South Korea Sunday bubbled over into a crude tweet about how people from that country "can go burn" and are "a bunch of mongoloids," what did he think was going to happen, exactly?

What did happen was so predictable that it hardly even needs to be mentioned. He was sent home, probably on the first available flight out of Heathrow.

The London Games, it seems, are destined to become known as the Twitterlympics ? or, more accurately, the first of the Twitterlympics, because social media isn't going anywhere. The question is: How much will the golden fist of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allow athletes to get way with? ?

Athletes are tweeting everything short of reports on trips to the loo. Normally, that's OK. We just get pearls like: "Walking the streets of London." (Thank you, @KingJames.)

But the press follows every athlete feed it can find, like buzzards circling above the smartphones of the unwary. And then the inevitable happens. Mr. Morganella vents his post-match spleen. American soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo flames one of the most beloved players in women's soccer history. A Greek triple jumper makes a crude and completely unprovoked comment about African immigrants.

The United States Olympic Committee, for its part, says it offers athletes no specific direction about tweeting during the Games. The 140-character digital stroll inside athletes' minds is, USOC officials figure, covered by existing codes of conduct.

So, for example, don't say anything on Twitter that you wouldn't say to a reporter. Or your mom.

Problem is, Ms. Solo would probably?troll Brandi Chastain, World Cup winner and kicker of the single most important penalty in American soccer history, directly to her face. Given the opportunity to apologize for tweeting that Ms. Chastain was, to put it kindly, completely out of her depth as an NBC commentator, Solo declined.

She has not been disciplined, so score that one for the Twitter users and free speech.?

A group of athletes also took to Twitter Sunday to protest the IOC's Rule 40, which prevents athletes from promoting any sponsors during the Olympics except the 11 Olympic megasponsors (such as McDonald's and Samsung). The athletes say they could not compete without their sponsors, and it is unfair to deprive non-IOC sponsors of the platform that is the Olympics.

No word yet on whether those athletes will be forced to act as traffic cones in Piccadilly Circus by Supreme Olympic Mugwump Jacques Rogge, so the jury is still out on how far athletes can push Twitter protests at the Olympics.?

What is clear is that comments that are likely to offend virtually every reasonable human being on the planet are not suddenly OK because you type them using your thumbs. Morganella at least acknowledged that what he did was very, very wrong.?

"I made a huge error,? Morganella said in a statement.

Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou, for her part, seemed to think nothing of her pre-Olympics tweet that "with so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!"?

Her response:?"That's how I am. I laugh. I am not a CD to get stuck!!! And if I make mistakes, I don't press the replay! I press Play and move on!!!"

She did not move on to London, at least.?

Score one for the IOC!

So as toward perceive dreams and operate by them, inventive we need to perceive just a little bit regarding how the brain works.

The brain involves three basic degree, the limbic, which is accountable for.. well.. everything. It is a primary binary fraction. It both makes or does one thing, or it doesn?t. Like a pc, 1?s and 0?s. All a pc does, is add 1. It simply does it blindingly fast. And all these mathematical adding equations convert into e mail, video?s and Facebook. the limbic piece of the mind capabilities in much the identical mode. It creates a chemical that makes you afraid, or it doesn?t. It tells the physique to make one thing, or it doesn?t. very uncomplicated- sort of.

The realm of the mind we rely on the largely, especially in our western tradition, is the frontal piece. This is the element via motive and language. It?s the latest component of the human mind, in terms of progress. It?s the place all the chatter comes from, and the thinking.

These sections of the mind do not share a standard language. Just such a pc- we don?t ?speak? in binary. So an interface is important; an operating approach by aspect of which the 2 sides can communicate. On a computer, this is windows operating manner, or the Mac OS10, etc. Within the brain, it is the mid-division of the brain.

The mid-division is the area of goals and creativity. Our desires construct entire sense, as quickly as they?re happening. Within the dream we know the things things characterize and their goal within the dream. No less than mainly of the time. We?re completely afraid of the fluorescent purple penguin that offers you a cookie. It is logical in the context of the dream, we know why we are afraid, and what it represents. Not less than in the dream. Attempt explaining the dream toward someone and it will probably sound quite silly.

Not to mention how dreams appear to someone else, they can be much more bizarre toward us. We also wrestle by manner of them, attempting toward build meaning out of weird and surreal events. Generally we know exactly the issues goes on. Other times, not so much. It is because desires are drawing on symbols and meanings from out unconscious and the collective unconscious to which our rational brains don?t always get prepared access.

However there isn?t any mistaking how potent and highly effective goals are. The mere undeniable fact that with out dreaming we would go insane, actually, illustrates how important they?re toward our effectively-being. Goals are part of the mythic panorama of the mid-brain. This is where we function issues out. The dreaming area of the mind could use linear language and ideas, however doesn?t really and absolutely serve on rational linear or verbal language. The mid-brain responds to creativity, music, ritual and ceremony. The indigenous cultures comprehend this intuitively. In all their healing supply, ceremony, ritual and sacred drama play an integral role.

To sidetrack, our modern marriage ceremony ceremony is a perfect instance of a ritual. It could be effortless to receive someone say: okay, now you are married. Go house to your newer life. As an alternative, we build a really large extravaganza around this event. There?s the bridal bathe, the bachelor get together, the rehearsal and costumes, the ceremony, the reception and honeymoon. WOW- that?s numerous event. What this does, is make the heightened sense of the importance of the marriage. The issues it?s doing more than that, conversely, is the ritual that emphasises that an important transition is taking place. The two customers being married are intrinsically changed. They enter this ritual in a single emotional, energetic and authorized state. On the conclusion they don?t seem to be the same. One thing involves shifted and they?re now in an innumerable state on all levels.

This ritual incorporates and caters toward the wants of that mid-division of the brain. A change is affected, and additional empowered by incorporating parts that utilize the full brain.

So, now: back to dreams. Dreams are powerful know-how. This comprehension may be from your self and your unconscious. Or maybe it is from the invisible worlds, or the collective unconscious. No matter where desires originate, the know-how is being presented. So in one method or another it should own some deep cost used for us.

Try considering of your desires like one other person. (Not the schizophrenic form). Though as nonetheless somebody who doesn?t speak English, and is desperately attempting to talk something toward you. They might not even get a verbal language. Your goals are either enacting something so to re-awareness it and supply it out, or they are enacting something you possess NOT skilled and attempting out assorted possibilities and outcomes. It could be that your dreams are attempting toward give out a kind of preventative measure, as well. Working one thing out in a dream might help us to not want the know-how in real life.

Imagine you had a loss while you have been young. It?s unresolved. This may occasionally repeat in the patterns of your life. As long as we can resolve this unique loss by fashion of our dreams, then we cannot possess the necessity toward recreate the knowledge in our waking world. Pretty cool, actually.

Suppose you are not superb at remembering your dreams. Leisure strategies might help with that. Bear in mind, desires come from the identical area of the brain the place our creativity lives. So issues that help creativity must also assist through dreams. Construct a time each night used for ?playtime.? Draw, write a poem, pay attention toward music (music without words is probably better). Think of something that?s initial, playful, with out expectation, importance of goal. Try journal writing. Principally, you want toward work at decreasing stress in order that the first space of the mind, the interior baby, can stretch and play. Even some yoga or stretching might be beneficial.

Some medicinal herbs that can help via dreaming. Mugwort is one in all them, there are others- you can analysis on the internet. Nearly all of the herbs that help with dreaming, appear toward be meant for lowering stress- which is sensible, since dreaming is part of our creativity-associated mind: the non-linear logical area. You might try relaxation methods, a form of meditation, significantly before bed. Also, attempt retaining a dream journal- it actually does improve dream retrieval. I by no means used toward remember my goals, nonetheless while I commenced protecting a journal, and writing down my desires each morning? I started toward remember them by fashion of a lot better readability, and regularity: each morning I had 2-5 dreams. This additionally helped/helps in tracking the occasions going on and connecting dots. All in all, a very invaluable practice.

You may as well try among the theta mind wave CDs that assist the brain obtain that theta state of relaxation.
And do not stress over goals not being ?good?. Goals are knowledge from you, your higher self, and/ or the invisible world of helpers FOR you. The essential thing is to bring the message/ understanding the desires are conveying, and applying it. Like with any advisor/friend? uitilising the connection- improves the relationship.

Do you obtain the same dream repeatedly? are you aware it properly?

Pick the dream apart the system you might if you had been writing in relation to it/them. Actually, writing in relation to it/ them could also be beneficial. Begin by making a move chart on the wall, maybe and just write numerous aspects down. When you hit one method of the dream, the issues associations do you obtain? Are there prospects you realize within the dream? Are there messages within the dream? Look in favor of patterns and connections. Be able to step again from your writing or circulation chart or diagram meant for a number of hours or a day. Look at it by aspect of fresh eyes. Does anything stand out to you? Maybe ask a very good pal to simply check out a chart or diagram and see the things they see? Generally the comment or query from a contemporary set of eyes is a large benefit. Maybe have a dream accomplice where you reciprocate this offer. No judgment or incriminations- simply questions, thoughts and input.

Goals are messages and experience from out unconscious and/ or from the invisible realms. What is the purpose of the dream? Is the purpose just toward form you afraid? Are you supposed toward be afraid of something in specific?

The more we function by method of our goals, the extra accessible they become. Additionally, like information any language, we turn into more fluent. Over time we begin to recognise patterns and themes. There may also be recurring events in dreams, or we start toward acknowledge the symbols our dreams charge. Designed for example, possibly every time we?re shifting into a scary area of a panorama, a red chook exhibits up. As lengthy as we see it at what time, it may not stand out as anything significant. Conversely over time, we might even see the purple bird and then know its relevance. Then we have a greater experience within the dream. We?d see a purple hen, and select a numerous path, or arm ourselves by some form of safety. As in all issues, learning is the foremost toward being able to select extra wisely. It is merely a matter of learning how to tune in, hear, and fashion meaning. The magic and energy of the universe is continually unfolding round us, ready intended for us with love and patience. In this way, it is our mother or father, guiding our first steps into the huge unknown.

Hail at the Summer Olympics? Tennis delay at Wimbledon

Play in the Olympic tennis tournament at Wimbledon was delayed in all but one match as the Centre Court roof was closed following a hailstorm which lashed the All England Club on Sunday.

Hail and heavy rain briefly poured down at the south-west London venue just as play was set to get underway on the outside courts at 1030GMT.

The storm didn't last long, but it was enough to persuade organisers to close the Centre Court roof, which saw regular action during the recent rain-hit Wimbledon, for the first time in the Olympic tournament.

Play on Centre Court was only held up by around 10 minutes as this year's beaten Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska and Germany's Julia Goerges emerged just after the scheduled midday start on the main show court.

It was the first time Olympic tennis has been played indoors in the modern era, although the event was staged under a roof in Stockholm in 1912 and London in 1908.

However, on the uncovered Court One, where world number two Novak Djokovic starts against Italy's Fabio Fognini, and the rest of the outside courts, play remained suspended for over two hours due to persistent showers.

(AP) ? A year into his presidency, Ollanta Humala has proven most popular among the Peruvians who most feared him as a candidate, and least popular with the poor he professed to champion.

His ratings are lackluster, his popularity on a downward slide.

As Humala's approval rating dropped from 59 percent five months ago to 40 percent today, much of the blame owes to his inability to resolve a conflict over Peru's largest mining project in the northern state of Cajamarca.

Local farmers fear for their water supply, and five protesters were shot and killed there earlier this month opposing a government-backed plan for the open-pit Conga gold mine.

As a candidate, Humala had told the region's farmers their access to clean water was more important than the extraction of gold. Then he showed them otherwise, twice imposing states of emergency after anti-Conga violence that suspended civil liberties.

"The betrayal of his electoral promises, I think that's the most important element in the loss of popular support he has," said historian and columnist Nelson Manrique.

Humala, a 50-year-old former army lieutenant colonel, is suffering for taking a hard line against protesters; 17 people have been killed in violent disturbances since he took office.

Most of the conflicts were related to mining, which nets Peru more than two-thirds of its export earnings.

The political left has largely abandoned Humala, and he's been widely lambasted in the press for allegedly deficient leadership. He's changed his Cabinet chief three times, his interior minister four.

Humala himself has acknowledged shortcomings.

In a recent public act, he said "We're all learning here."

"We are sure to commit errors," the president continued. "Nobody is born knowing it all. We all learn in the doing."

A former interior minister, Fernando Rospigliosi, is among Humala's harshest critics.

"I think he has no idea what to do in nearly every realm save the economy, which he has put in the hands of people who know what they're doing ," he said, claiming Humala and his wife, Nadine Heredia, "are adrift and have no idea what to do with the country."

Heredia is widely considered the person who most influences Humala. Rather than engaging in activities traditionally reserved for Peru's first lady she manages her own, often separate agenda, frequently accompanied by ministers on her missions.

"Where is my minister?" Heredia recently asked in front of TV cameras at one event, at which point the education minister dutifully appeared.

There is skepticism about Humala's economic development agenda. Fifty-two percent of Peruvians think he has no clear plan, according to a poll published last Sunday by the GfK firm with an error margin of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

Peru's poverty rate has dropped 22 percentage points in the past two decades. But 28 percent of Peruvians still live in poverty, according to government figures.

Humala defends Conga for the billions of dollars he says it will fund programs for Peru's neediest people.

He's put some money from mining royalties to work for the poor but the help they've provided so far has been modest.

A program called "Juntos" that provides $37 a month to people living in extreme poverty had 474,064 beneficiaries in 2011. The government hopes to nearly double that number this year.

Another, which gives $94 a month to the elderly poor, benefited 41,253 people last year.

Humala created a Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion to oversee and amplify such programs though its minister, Carolina Trivelli, told The Associated Press that her office is still working on ways to measure the programs' effectiveness and reach.

"The president follows closely what we do," she said.

The programs have had some effect, with 31 percent of Peruvians saying that developing social programs is something Humala has done "well" or "very well," according the GfK survey.

But that's not solving the Conga conundrum. A 30-day state of emergency there lapses next week with no end to the conflict in sight and two Roman Catholic churchmen trying to mediate.

Humala is now looked upon far more favorably, meanwhile, by Peru's political right and the wealthy, which tended to vote for his rival in last year's election, Keiko Fujimori, daughter of jailed former President Alberto Fujimori.

A poll by the Ipsos Apoyo firm published in mid-July found 46 percent backing for Humala among Peru's upper class while its lower classes expressed 36 and 39 percent support. The poll had an error margin of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

The business community is pleased by 6 percent growth in the past year, a laudable pace at a time that major industrialized nations remain in an economic funk.

Humberto Speziani, president of Peru's main business group CONFIEP, calls Humala pragmatic.

"He is very conscious that without private investment you can't create jobs and you can't eliminate poverty."

Creepy robot baby now creepier with torso and floppy arms

6 hrs.

A robot baby being built as part of a neuroscience research program in Japan has just gotten a torso, including arms that flop around like an infant?s sans swaddle.

Affeto, the robo-baby, is creepy in its realism, which is what the team from Osaka University aims to accomplish as they use robotics to study ?how humans? higher cognitive functions develop,? according to a project description.

Ultimately, the robot will be used in behavioral experiments. For now, the researchers are trying to ?build a realistic child robot with a muscle-skeletal system.??

The torso?s flexibility comes from 22 pneumatic actuators in its body.

In the video below you can see that Affeto?s torso is approaching the realistic stage. At one point, it hits itself in the face with ?babyish looseness,? Endgadget notes.?

The robot?s face has the thousand-mile stare of a well satiated or exhausted infant, but that may be because the team has yet to pair the torso with the robotic head, which was demonstrated in Feb.?2011.

Stay tuned.

Olympic memories include Ali, Nadia, Phelps

Omar Torres / AFP - Getty Images file

Muhammed Ali lights the Olympic cauldron in 1996.

As the London Olympics begin, making new golden memories every day, it's time to look back on the Games of past years. We asked our staff and our Facebook readers to share their favorite memories of the Games.

Muhammad Ali lights the Olympic cauldron
My favorite summer Olympic memory doesn't involve anyone competing or winning a medal. It?came in Atlanta in 1996, when boxer Muhammad Ali, down but not out thanks to Parkinson's disease, lit the Olympic cauldron. Ali's participation was kept secret right up until the opening ceremonies-- could such a secret even be kept today, in our Internet savvy-Twitter hungry world? An actor stood in for Ali in rehearsal, leaving even those who knew of his involvement to wonder if he'd physically be able to put his torch to the contraption that would shoot the flame up to the cauldron. His hands shook, but with all the determination that made him the boxing legend he is, he made the connection, and the flame raced upwards and showed the world that the Games had begun. But more than that, it showed there were some things that were bigger than a gold medal, and that Ali was still the Greatest.??? --Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Finally catching The Dream Team
Watching the Dream Team eviscerate the men?s basketball competition at the Barcelona Olympics was required viewing for this 15-year-old in the summer of 1992. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley and the rest of the NBA?s elite players on one team? That was must-see TV.?Or not. My parents insisted on taking three boys on a five-week, 3,500-mile road trip from Wyoming, to the Pacific Northwest, up to Canada and back home, replete with family bonding, random hotels and campsites, and untold hours on the road, staring at various landscapes (or whatever Stephen King book I?d brought). Sure, we saw the ocean, Pike Place Market, rode a ferry and walked on a glacier. But I was missing history! Even then, I knew this collection of players was never going to happen again. We saw snippets of the action on TV, but it seemed CBC was uninterested in showing NBA legends (read: Americans) own the Games. It wasn?t until we hit Great Falls, Mont.?? blessed Great Falls and its spotty TV reception ? on the trip home before I could fully marvel at the Dream Team.?They were worth it.?? --Mike Miller

Standing in the spot where Michael Phelps made history
I?ve watched the Olympics since I was a kid. Like much of America in the summer of 2008, I tuned in for a chance to see Team USA?s Michael Phelps swim his way to his 8th gold medal of the Beijing Games, breaking Mark Spitz?s 1972 record for most gold medals in a single Games. This past spring, I had an opportunity to visit Beijing and took my family to the Water Cube, part of which has been transformed into an indoor water park, complete with water slides, a lazy river and a wave pool. But the Olympic pool remains, and as I paused at the spot where Phelps made history, I wanted to jump in and swim a few laps myself. If Phelps wins just three more medals in the London Games, he will be the most decorated Olympian of all time. ?It?s not about going out and swimming 15 events. It?s about going out and capping off a career.? Phelps recently told TODAY. Michael Phelps, America will be watching.??? --Joy Jernigan

Dara Torres shows you're never too old
I hold a secret desire to be in the Olympics. I?m still figuring out which sport, and now that I?m pushing 40, my choices are somewhat limited. (Table tennis? Curling?) But age didn?t stop five-time Olympian Dara Torres, who at age 41 won three silver medals in swimming at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. ?Don?t put an age limit on your dreams,? she told NBC News after earning her 12th career Olympic medal. Her accomplishments certainly inspired me to hit the pool a bit more. Although at 45 ? 45! ? she didn?t make the U.S. Olympic team this year (finishing less than a tenth of a second behind one of the qualifiers), she?s an inspiration to us would-be Olympians everywhere.?? --J.J.

Nadia was perfect
Definitely watching Nadia Comaneci score perfect 10's in the '76 Olympics, she was about my age and she was a MACHINE! I cheered her on every step of the way, even though she wasn't on team USA, I never missed the coverage of her on TV, and I will be watching all the gymnastics this summer as well!??? --Mary Wilson Truckor, via?Facebook

Dream team at McDonald's
I was lucky enough to be stationed in Spain during the '92 Summer Games. A group of friends and I drove from Torrejon to Barcelona to catch whatever events we could and I was lucky enough to see the men's volleyball team play. Later that evening, while sitting in a McDonald's, we bumped into Charles Barkley from the "Dream Team" who was meeting someone there.? --Doug Peacock, via Facebook

I love L.A.
Attending the opening ceremonies for the '84 Olympics at the Coliseum. All the pianos playing "Ode To Joy," the wild west show and Rafer Johnson climbing to the top of the peristyle to light the torch -- an amazing show. It made me proud to be an American and an Angeleno!??? --Patrick Reynolds, via Facebook

Roku picks up financing from BSkyB, News Corp and more, keeps eye on the premium streaming crown

The little media streamer company that could, Roku, has gained some powerful friends in its latest round of financing, with $45 million in funds coming from the likes of BSkyB, News Corp and another partner who would prefer to remain nameless at this time, as well as previous investors Menlo Ventures and Globespan Capital Partners. While we leave you to ponder which company might be that unidentified source, Roku is simply continuing on, earmarking the money for use in building brand awareness, expanding internationally and much, much more. Also, that MHL-connected Roku Streaming Stick introduced at CES? It hasn't gone away and is still on track for launch later this year, with an eye towards providing a "Roku Inside" bundled experience for otherwise dumb flat-panel HDTVs.

Roku's alignment with BSkyB (which reported a $10m stake in its earnings this morning, as well as the option to distribute its own branded Roku hardware) makes sense after the pay-TV giant launched Now TV recently with the hockey puck as one of its supported platforms, while CEO Anthony Wood tells us the fruitful partnership with News Corp had its root in the Fox News, Wall Street Journal Live and X-Factor channels it launched last year. Wood cites plans to make Roku "the TV distribution platform of the future", and this fifth round of financing -- larger than all previous rounds combined -- may help push it in this direction, check out a few more details in the press release after the break.

Home Improvement with Contemporary Furniture - House of Maria

Posted by admin in Furniture and Fixture on 25-07-2012

For people who want a clean and sleek look inside their homes, contemporary furniture pieces are the best bet. These days, people living in limited-spaced apartments, condominiums and small homes want something functional, stylishly modern yet affordable stuff around them. Years ago, designers go for the grand, classy and bulk wooden furniture to place around well-spaced homes, but this is no longer the case because considering the small spaces of rooms these days, traditional furniture pieces is not longer a practical choice.

Photobucket

When choosing furniture to improve the looks of your home make it more appealing and modern, consider the size of the room. This will help you choose well suited furniture for the size, type and style of the room you have. There are affordable contemporary furniture sales that you can look up online. You can choose among the designs available and get amazing deals for what you shop. More than the style, durability and functionality of the furniture that you choose, it should also be affordable enough to suit your home improvement budget. Stick with trusted stores and ask for a warranty policy. This is a definite must and even if you choose low-priced furniture, warranty and quality should not be sacrificed.

Amazon courts software developers for apps and games

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc has focused single-mindedly on consumers for much of its existence. Now it has a new obsession: developers.

The world's largest Internet retailer is ratcheting up its courtship of apps software developers as it pits its Kindle Fire -- and potentially other mobile gadgets -- against Apple Inc and Google Inc.

Games and apps are key to that effort, so Amazon is plowing a lot of resources into wooing this increasingly important community.

Amazon sees the Fire as a way to spur sales of its trove of online content -- from books to TV shows to music. But analysts say it is also taking aim at the booming market for mobile applications and games, increasing competition with platform operators Apple, Google, Microsoft Corp and Facebook Inc.

Amazon has assembled a team, overseen by Aaron Rubenson, that works with developers one-on-one to design, test, launch and market apps and games for the Fire.

Amazon had begun hiring for this team before it launched the Fire in September, but the recruiting drive has accelerated since then, according to a person familiar with the company's strategy for developers who was not authorized to speak publicly. An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment.

"Amazon is a very viable platform and we are encouraged by the speed at which they are moving," said Niccolo de Masi, chief executive of game developer Glu Mobile. "They have a very good chance of being the number three player in developer revenues, ahead of Microsoft, if they execute over the next few years."

Apple, considered the mobile platform leader by developers, unveiled the iPhone in early 2007 and did not launch its App Store until mid-2008.

"It took them about three years to really have a semblance of developer relations," de Masi said. "Amazon's gotten there a lot faster, which is a benefit of starting later. They are trying to compress what Apple did into a year."

'VIRTUOUS CYCLE'

Amazon is moving fast because it wants a piece of what is expected to be a huge market for games, apps and other digital content. Lazard Capital Markets sees this growing 26 percent a year to $67.4 billion worldwide by 2015, with games accounting for more than $30 billion.

"These are just the early chapters of a truly transformational story from a pure e-commerce player to digital media platform," Lazard analyst Atul Bagga wrote in a recent note to investors.

Like other platform operators, Amazon typically takes a 30 percent cut of app and game revenue. This may be more profitable than Amazon's original online retail business. Bagga expects profit margins of about 10 percent for Amazon's digital media business, versus 3 percent to 5 percent for its core operations.

Strong developer interest in Amazon's platform is crucial if the company is going to be a credible digital media player, Bagga added.

If Amazon can pull this off, it may create a "virtuous cycle," in which good apps and games encourage more people to buy Amazon devices, which in turn attracts more developers bringing yet more apps and games, the analyst said.

POOR START

When Amazon launched its tablet in September, the Appstore was understaffed and some developers were frustrated because apps took several weeks to get approved, said Ted Morgan, chief executive of Skyhook Wireless, which supplies location data for Kindle Fire developers.

But several developers said the company has improved this year.

"They have hired and trained people to work with developers and that was clearly not there when they launched," said Evan Conway, president of OneLouder, which designs social mobile apps for the Fire.

In July, Amazon hired Robert Williams, a business development executive from Microsoft's Windows Phone unit, to help with developer outreach at its Appstore.

"Amazon is not excellent at developer relations," said Charlie Kindel, who worked with Williams as general manager of the Windows Phone developer experience.

"Hiring people like Robert will help fix that."

Kindel is founder of BizLogr, a software startup, and his Kindel Systems LLC is an advertising affiliate of Amazon.

SHARING DATA

In recent months, Amazon has unveiled a slew of new services for developers, including in-app purchasing, a gaming leaderboard and cloud syncing add-on called GameCircle, and an online toolkit with design tips and sample code.

Most apps take less than a week to be approved now and Amazon has a dedicated team who test the apps to make sure they work on the Fire tablet and do not contain malware, according to the person familiar with Amazon's developer plans.

When an app fails to pass, Amazon emails developers with suggestions on how to get it approved, the person added.

Once apps are published on Amazon's platform, developers can see online reports detailing the number of downloads and what in-app purchases are being made, the person said.

Amazon is much more willing to share such data with developers than Apple and Google, according to Lazard's Bagga.

"If you are a platform owner competing with Google and Apple you have to have something more," the analyst said.

'RATE CARD'

One developer, who has published on all three platforms, said Amazon is a lot clearer about how it will promote apps. The person did not want to be identified due to lack of authority to speak publicly.

Amazon offers free app promotion through a section at the top of the Kindle Fire's Appstore, which is curated by editors on Rubenson's team.

Developers can also pay to have their apps advertised and promoted by Amazon. The company has a "rate card" showing developers the cost of such promotions on various Amazon websites, the developer said.

This is a big contrast to Apple and Google, which do not offer a paid option and are "opaque" about their curated lists of apps, the developer added.

'CONDITIONED TO PAY'

Developers are most excited about in-app purchasing on Amazon's platform. That is especially true in the mobile game area, where a lot of games are free but let users buy things while they are playing.

When a Kindle Fire user downloads an app or game, it automatically links to Amazon's payment system, which has the consumer's credit card details on file.

Apple has a similarly smooth payment system, however some developers said Amazon has an advantage because its customers are more accustomed to buying on its site.

"Users have a propensity to pay and are conditioned to pay for content," said Yusuf Goolamabbas, chief technology officer at Animoca, a developer of mobile games. "Even with Apple, customers are not as used to buying things online."

That means Animoca is generating higher average revenue per user, or ARPU, from its games that run on the Kindle Fire.

"A lot of developers, including us, have seen ARPU numbers that are very high," Goolamabbas said. "For certain games they are the highest of any platform we work with."

Rival PNG prime ministers join forces to form new government

PORT MORESBY (Reuters) - Papua New Guinea's rival prime ministers have ended a political feud that left the resource-rich country with two leaders for the most of the past year, joining forces to form a government in a surprise twist to the South Pacific nation's elections.

The peace deal means incumbent Prime Minister Peter O'Neill is most likely to head the new government and form a coalition after a prolonged national election in the often volatile country, with backing from rival Michael Somare.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank our founding father of our country, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, for joining us, making sure that we provide a government that is truly deserving for Papua New Guinea with all the stability that it deserves," O'Neill said.

The result, if endorsed by parliament next week, should bring a new level of political stability to the nation of around 6.5 million people after a tumultuous year.

Despite its mineral wealth, successive governments have been unable to deliver infrastructure or services to the people, with around 80 percent of the population living on subsistence village farming and small cash crops.

PNG is the home to a $15.7 billion Exxon Mobil gas export project, and the giant OK Tedi copper mine which began production in 1987, as well as the Frieda River copper project, run by Swiss-based global miner Xstrata.

Exxon's LNG project is expected to start production in 2014 and boost GDP by about 20 percent.

Somare, the elder statesman of South Pacific politics at 76 and the country's first prime minister in 1975 after independence from Australia, re-contested his seat despite being gravely ill for much of 2011.

His ill health sparked the feud. O'Neill was voted in as prime minister after Somare was ruled ineligible due to his prolonged absence from parliament.

While O'Neill had the support of parliament, the Supreme Court twice ruled that Somare was legitimate prime minister, leaving the country with rival leaders.

The election, which dragged on for more than a month, was praised by observers as being "largely peaceful", despite reports of sporadic violence.

Other failings included bribery, widespread delays and anomalies in polling, destruction of ballot boxes, and discrimination against women, the Commonwealth Observer Group said in an interim report into the election earlier this month.

The final makeup of the 111-seat parliament should be clear by Friday, when official results are declared.

More than 3,400 candidates from 46 political parties contested the poll, where around half of the country's lawmakers have so far lost their seats.

To form a government, a leader must cobble together a coalition of at least 56 lawmakers during the post-election horse-trading, with the prime minister directly elected by a vote in parliament, which is due to meet by August 3.
