The reason for the Wii U disinterest? ? Malstrom's Articles News

As I am seeing everyone?s reactions, people are actually excited for Wii U?s launch games such as Super Mario Brothers 6, Pikmin 3, and even some of the Nintendo Land games.

Every gamer, be it the 2d Mario fan, the 3d Mario fan, the Wii sports gamer, the Fire Emblem gamer, seem to be sharing the same question. Where is this console going?

The Wii was very exciting because everyone assumed Nintendo would want to continue their success. What we got instead were workshop experiments like Wii Music and little to no follow-up on what Wii Sports started. The Wii just fell off the Earth in terms of interest as Nintendo adopted a workshop mentality.

The Wii U is a tough sell because no one wants to buy it and have the future games be ones they don?t want. People buy game consoles not just for the current games released but for the games coming out. If you are a 2d Mario fan, such as myself, buying the Wii U now for Super Mario Brothers 6 isn?t enough because I fear the future is just 3d Mario and Aonuma Zelda. If you happened to be a Gamecube fan, Pikmin 3 intrigues you. But you fear Wii U?s future will be to non-Gamecube games.

One thing the Xbox 360 and PS3 successfully did was create an extensive interest for a certain gamer. If you bought a game console for Halo or Call of Duty, there was tons of similar games there to fulfill the enjoyment. But on the Nintendo console, there can be no extensive enjoyment. There may only be one or two games you want which doesn?t cut buying into the console. No one wants to spend next generation with a game console gathering dust.

Game console business is a service business. People want to know how the game console will keep servicing their gaming needs. 2d Mario fans are hesitant to jump in if that is the only type of game that will appeal to them on the system for the entire generation. The same goes for Pikmin 3 fans.

In the past, the Nintendo fan bought many of the games on that console. From the NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube, the Nintendo fan bought most if not all the first party games. Now something is different. Not all the games appeal. It is as if Nintendo is targeting different demographic groups. This becomes a problem because now it feels like the game library is extremely small because only a couple games intrigue a different type of consumer. Making games for everyone may not sell the console to everyone. Instead, it may thin things out so much that no one sees justification in buying the console.
